Yangshuo: Nine Horse Mural Hill
Mural Hill is situated on the west bank of the Li River near Yangshuo. It is a big stone cliff facing the river. The sun reflects of the rock and many different colours are visible, depending on the weather and time of day. This, plus its position near the Li River, has made it popular with photographers. The easiest way to get a good photo opportunity is from a boat on the Li River from either Xingping or Yangdi. Neigbouring hills also provide good spots for a photo.

The face of the cliff is said to resemble a mural of nine horses, each in different poses. There is a legend that says the horses wandered away from heaven when left unattended by Sun Wukong who is also known as the Monkey King. They then roamed the earth until they were found by a God sent to find them. They were finally found at dawn while bathing in the Li River. They attempted to flee, but ran into the cliff-side in panic. They were then turned to stone as punishment for not returning to Heaven The horses are in varying poses with some running or drinking water, so it’s difficult to try to identify them. An old folk song says that anyone who can spy the horses with in the rock is destined to be a great scholar. In ancient times, this would mean getting the highest score in the imperial examination.
