Yangshuo: Shutong Hill
Shutong Hill is located on the East Bank of the Li River just a little further down from Yangshuo Bridge. It’s about 10 metres high and is the smallest peak along the river. There is a famous legend about the hill. A dragon is said to have terrorized the lives of the local people living by the river. A wise teacher was said to have possessed an ancient sealed book giving instructions on how to defeat the dragon. He gave this book to a local boy.

When the dragon saw this book, it fell down into the river. Fearing that the dragon might be playing a trick on him, he transformed into the hill which now guards the people from harm. The hill is said to resemble the boy, dressed n long-sleeved robes, reading his book attentively. Both professional and amateur photographers seek out various viewing points to capture images of the Hill in all seasons. You can view it in its full splendour in Spring and Autumn. The Hill can easily be reached by bicycle. If you go across Yangshuo Bridge and continue for about 300 metres then look for the turnoff on the right onto a narrow road. You can keep going straight on this road to the banks of the Li River. You can follow the river until you come across the best viewing points, the best of which you can find after are a few hundred metres .
