Yangshuo: Snail Hill

One of the most distinctive hills that line the Li River near Yangshuo, Snail Hill is located around a km south Of Xingping town. The hill is of course said to resemble a snail but there is also a cave nearby the base called ‘Snail Cave.’

The cave actually has two parts and has several Stalactites which are likened to different birds, flowers, fruits and animals. There are three stones hanging in the cave which are called ‘snail stones’ which are often referred to as the offspring from the larger snail of Snail Hill.

The small building nearby is called Tengjiao Nunnery. It was originally constructed in the Ming Dynasty between 1368 and 1644, On the 3rd of the 3rd lunar month; the 6th of the 6th lunar month and 9th of the 9th lunar month, local parents will take their kids here to pray for future academic success.
