Swimming in Yangshuo

Swimming in two of the rivers near Yangshuo is a very relaxing way to spend an afternoon, although you have to watch the sun in the Summer months.

Swimming in the Yulong River

The Yulong River

The Yulong river is the better of the two rivers for swimming and is cleaner. It takes about 20 minutes to get to two of the better swimming spots.

One of the bridges allows you to jump or dive into the water from a height of several metres. This is popular and quite safe providing you are a strong swimmer. If you are not a strong swimmer the current can be a bit strong here.

Diving into the Yulong River

However, further down the river there is a grassy bank by the riverside and you can paddle or wade here as the current slows down. Both spots here are surrounded by some wonderful scenery. Local couples often dress up to have their wedding photos taken here.

The Li River

The Li River has a strong current in many places, so you should be careful if you are not a strong swimmer. However, there is one place on that river that is about 15 minutes away from the town by bicycle nicknamed "the secret beach." There is a sandy patch of ground next to the river. It gets a little rocky once in the river.

Nevertheless, it's ideal for beginner swimmers as it allows you to gently paddle or wade to a depth at which you are comfortable. You do have to watch out for passing boats if you swim far out and the cleanliness of the water varies from season to season too.
